Hygge Bakery
"Hygge" is a Danish word that is hard to translate into English, but it means something along the lines of "cozy" (I first heard it about a year or so ago on "House Hunters International," and have made a personal effort to use it as frequently as possible since then!). Downtown LA's Hygge Bakery features authentic Danish pastries, from buttery, flaky Kringle bars and raspberry or apple-filled Spandauer to beautifully formed marzipan petit fours -- all featuring sweet little Danish flag placards in their plentiful pastry case -- these pastries are lovingly baked with meticulous to original recipes brought from the mother country. The dough recipes make use of bakers margarine (sourced through a wholesale bakery supplier in the San Fernando Valley), not butter, to give the pastries that special magical lilt of layers. Little cafe tables out front make the perfect spot for people watching on this quiet little stretch of Hope Street, and a cup of coffee and a Kringle bar will leave you feeling downright "hygge."
