Beautifully authentic food paired with impeccable, friendly service and a welcoming atmosphere are the cornerstones of what I crave when I seek out excellent Italian food. Chef and owner Gino Angelini of Angelini Osteria, who came to Los Angeles from the food-centric Emilia Romagna region of Italy in the mid 90’s, built his warmly intimate Italian restaurant around the concept of local, regional, classic Italian food. The restaurant’s name and sensibility embody the feel of traditional Italian “osterias,” where neighbors meet to enjoy regionally produced gourmet foods and wines (as the restaurant’s website states, the focus of the Italian community has historically rested on three things: the town square, the church, and the osteria). Chef Angelini’s food – from a perfectly simple black truffle pizza, to sautéed scallops with aged balsamic vinegar, to a delectable whole branzio roasted in sea salt – maintains that wonderful fusion of brilliantly approachable food paired with finesse and technique that demonstrates true culinary beauty. Angelini Osteria is classic Italian food at its best in a venue that truly makes me feel as if I’ve been welcomed back home by family I’d never before met.
