Sapp Coffee Shop
Having lived in Thai Town in Hollywood once upon a time, I have a lingering love for strip mall-based, extremely casual Thai lunchrooms with zero pretentions and fabulous noodles. Sapp Coffee Shop on Hollywood Blvd. -- once featured on Anthony Bourdain’s beloved Travel Channel show No Reservations -- to me epitomizes this kind of joint, and “Sapp” (a Laotian word meaning “tasty” or “delicious”) certainly lives up to its name. A small, sunny restaurant with yellow-gold walls, Sapp boasts only a scant few tables, which are nearly always packed at lunchtime with a devoted Thai clientele that appreciates the shop’s authentic, comforting dishes. With modestly priced (cash only!) plates, it’s all too easy to indulge in famously flavorful Thai Boat Noodles (served with chili, cinnamon, and pig’s blood), stir fry dishes packed with garlic, and -- my personal favorite -- Jade noodles served with barbeque pork, duck, and crabmeat. Between celebrity chef fans like David Chang and Mario Batali and local Thai-food aficionados, it’s certainly no wonder this unassuming little corner restaurant is a staple within the Thai Town community
