Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams
As if I needed another reason to love Los Feliz (or an excuse to eat ice cream!), I’ve enjoyed occasionally indulging in the sweet, frozen treats produced by Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams for years -- snagging them originally at Surfas in Culver City, and now available at both Whole Foods and Gelson's -- but their dedicated shop on Hillhurst is another experience entirely. With tubs and tubs of gloriously inventive and complex flavors at my fingertips, I found it hard to contain my sampling of flavors to one cone! A socially conscious brand founded in Columbus, Ohio in 2002, Jeni’s ice cream is “blended, baked, mixed, peeled, chopped, skinned, pulverized, roasted, toasted, and blow torched” by hand by the brand, utilizing local produce, milk from grass-grazed cows, and Fair-Trade-Certified ingredients. With her background in art, baking, and perfumery, it’s no wonder Jeni Britton Bauer’s creations -- the likes of “Ultramarine Blue Buttermilk” with pulverized wild Maine blueberries and natural fruit extracts with buttermilk and biodynamic yogurt; or “Garance Vert Clair” with lemongrass, coriander leaf, and spirulina -- read like a mad scientist’s grocery list and taste like culinary poetry. With cookbooks, mugs, sauces, and pints for sale, it’s easy to leave the store having spent a small fortune (but it’s nice to know that each and every penny is worth it!).
