Wood Handcrafted Pizza
Always a fan of family interests and businesses, I was happy to have an excuse when meeting my brother on the eastside of town for lunch to try out Wood Handcrafted Pizza in Silver Lake (run by brothers and co-owners Erik and Edgar Martirosyan, whose parents helm the Big Mama’s and Papa’s Pizzeria chain). With an extensive range of Neapolitan pizzas, the Martiroysans’ menu also features freshly baked, wood-fired panuozzo sandwiches filled with a variety of cured Italian meats, cheeses, and delicious fresh vegetables. I went for the classic Caprese with heirloom tomatoes, burrata cheese, basil, balsamic vinegar, and extra virgin olive oil while my brother and boyfriend went for more meat-centric options like the Italian Sausage (with smoked sauce, grilled onions, grilled green peppers, roasted tomatoes and garlic, Italian sausage, and parsley), and the Di Carne (with tomato sauce, roasted meats, grilled onions, grape tomatoes, pepperoncini, arugula, fresh mozzarella, and smoked mozzarella). Across the board, the perfectly charred yet chewy bread provided the perfect vessel in which to transport all of these delicious ingredients, and I’m already looking forward to the next time I’m on that side of town to trying either a dine-in or take-away traditional pizza!
