Animal - brunch
To date, Animal remains one of my favorite restaurants in Los Angeles. I fully fault myself for waiting nearly half a year to sample their semi-recent brunch addition, because – as I could only imagine – the menu is absolutely superb (plus, seeing chef Vinny Dotolo alongside his wife and wee little son hop across Fairfax from Animal to Jon and Vinny’s first thing in the morning was absolutely charming!). Chefs Dotolo and Shook include both brunch fare as well as Animal dinner favorites on their morning menu, like the ever-flavorful Hamachi tostada; the succulent barbeque pork belly sliders; and – now that the ban has been lifted – the triumphant return of the foie gras and biscuit with maple sausage gravy. But the more breakfast-oriented dishes are both equally stellar and Animal-centric, like the "Tamago" Scramble with bone marrow sushi rice, Japanese pickles, and arare; Raymundo's Chilaquiles with Mexican sour cream, cilantro, scallion, and cotija (a dish which tastes – and I mean this entirely as a compliment – like high-end nacho cheese Dorritos); and Pastrami Reuben Benedict on rye with sauerkraut, hollandaise, and thousand island sauce. Per usual, the cacophonous voices of happy diners ring louder and louder as small plates and mimosas are consumed, and it’s nice to now know that I can (for all intents and purposes) live of off Animal’s food all day long.
