The Pikey
The Pikey is good for a pint. The Pikey is good for dinner. The Pikey is good for brunch, and The Pikey is good for a Sunday roast. Suffice it to say, The Pikey is good. Really, really good. Having spent a year in London during college, I constantly crave a perfectly English slice of home, and The Pikey truly delivers on all fronts. Michelin-starred British chef Ralph Johnson, who hails from The Spotted Pig in New York, has perfected gastropub dining with a refinement, elegance, and mindfulness (the restaurant utilizes only organic, local produce and cruelty-free meats) that make The Pikey's food fill that British void for me. The thrice cooked chips with Worcestershire aioli are the best French fries I've ever eaten...in my entire life, and the Crispy Pig's Ear Salad with young kale, endive, pickled onions, and mustard dressing is that perfect, miraculous fusion of decadent and light eating. One of the English traditions I miss the most is that of enjoying a weekly Sunday roast, which lends a Thanksgiving-like celebratory foodie nature to each and every Sunday afternoon. The Pikey is my go-to destination for this classic British fare (slow-roasted meats like short rib and pork belly are serve with obligatory -- and incredible -- stuffing, roasted potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, and gravy), and with a couple of bottles of beer and a Ginger Minge cocktail or two, it's easy to wile the afternoon with family, friends, and a damn good British nosh-up.
