Lum-Ka-Naad
When I’m in the Valley and am craving incredible Thai food, I know Lum-Ka-Naad on Reseda Blvd. will always satisfy my hankering. Specializing in both Northern and Southern Thai cuisines, owners Alex Sonbalee and his wife, Chiang Mai – who are from the North and South of Thailand, respectively – authentically recreate the extremely wide range of regional Thai dishes on which they grew up. In that regard, Lum-Ka-Naad -- a Northern Thai phrase describing “delicious food” -- truly lives up to its name. Traditional items like spicy ground meat Larb salad and freshly pan-fried Pad See Ew noodles are as delicious as I would expect, but my favorite portion of the menu is the selection of Southern cuisine, labeled with the disclaimer “All items under this category are considered ‘too spicy’ for the average American.” Of these dishes, my go-to is the Krabi Spiced Chicken, pan-fried and marinated in delightfully spicy Southern flavors, and a staple in Chiang Mai’s hometown. Whether paired with a Thai iced tea or a cold Thai beer, Lum-Ka-Naad’s extensive menu, featuring over 170 dishes, effectively transforms Northridge into a culinary tour of Thailand’s regional cuisines.
