Huckleberry Café
There are few things in life I love more than polka dot wallpaper, but one is artful breakfast pastries. Lucky for me, Huckleberry Café – the beautiful eatery that is one quarter of Josh Loeb and Zoe Nathan’s expanding Rustic Canyon Family of Restaurants (also including Milo & Olive, Sweet Rose Creamery, and its namesake Rustic Canyon) – features both. Santa Monica locals, this culinary duo initially tested their breakfast concept with Saturday mornings at Rustic Canyon before allowing Huckleberry to claim a Santa Monica Blvd. space of its own in 2009. With her baking roots at the rightfully-famous Tartine in San Francisco, Zoe and her collaborating Pastry Chef de Cuisine, Laurel Almerinda, keep a daily case of seasonal tea cakes, crostatas, and tarts beautifully packed and awaiting enthusiastically hungry customers seven days a week. On the savory side, Executive Chef Michael Israel makes scrumptious dishes with local ingredients, like a stellar Duck Confit hash with Weiser Farm’s roasted potatoes, shallots, spinach & sunny-side up eggs, and his Niman Ranch pastrami Reuben. It’s a good thing I live on the East Side of town – were I any closer to this wonderful café, I’d likely turn into a huckleberry-sized Violet Beauregard (though I additionally have to show immense restraint from plowing through recipes in Zoe’s gorgeous cookbook!).
