Mud Hen Tavern (brunch)

I’ve long been a fan of chef and restaurateur Susan Feniger, and living walking distance from Mud Hen Tavern has made it one of my favorite easy brunch spots in Hollywood.  As many times as I’ve been, the iconic coconut and dark soy Kaya Toast is never to be skipped (and when we are feeling extra gluttonous, we often tack on an order of Avocado Toast!), and I adore the fact that their brunch menu truly features the perfect range of sweet and savory breakfast and lunch dishes. While my boyfriend often dives into the Chicken and Waffle Croquettes with spicy maple sauce, I’ve recently taken to the Hangover Burger with aioli, sharp cheddar, bacon, and a fried egg (their house-ground meat makes for an ideal medium-rare burger!). With a menu that’s so tried and true, I often enjoy adding little items here and there that let me explore a bit without straying from favorites – the Old Fashioned Maple Donut with espresso glaze is a sinfully and delectably rich treat, and I was dying to try the Bánh Mì Scotch Eggs featured on the restaurant’s Dine L.A. brunch menu (not yet available à la carte on the menu, but perhaps some day they will be!). Whether out on the patio or perched in the interior’s comfortable leather booths, I love hitting Mud Hen armed with a reservation and the ease of knowing that I can enjoy a cocktail or two (I’ve recently taken to “The Grapest Cocktail Ever,” originally because of its name, and now due to its beautiful flavor!) before ambling home after a deliciously wonderful meal.

Coconut Kaya Toast with soft egg and dark soy.

Smashed Avocado Toast with radish and fresh mint.

Hangover Burger with 100% all natural in-house grind, brioche bun, lettuce, tomato, aioli and sharp cheddar with bacon and a fried egg.
