Trejo's Tacos
Being both a fan of tacos (obviously) and actor Danny Trejo (Machete, From Dusk Til Dawn, Bubble Boy, Con Air, The Devil’s Rejects, Sons of Anarchy – what’s not to like?), I used the ideal excuse of a breezy, end-of-summer afternoon to enjoy an al fresco lunch at Trejo’s Tacos. With its well-rounded menu – designed by Chef Daniel Mattern of the late Cook’s County on Beverly – my boyfriend and I laughed to ourselves and realized we essentially planned to create our own taco sampler by ordering nearly every item on the menu. From traditional favorites like slow-roasted pork carnitas (paired with charred pineapple and fermented red chile sauce!) to modern, vegan options like rainbow cauliflower with cashew cream, the tacos span a lovely variety to please meat-craving omnivores and vegan, vegetarian, and gluten free diners alike. I was pleasantly surprised to find that my favorite taco among the bunch was the Fried Chicken, which came nestled in a lettuce wrap with slaw, chipotle cream, and pico de gallo. Danny Trejo’s own LA Arts District-brewed Amber Cerveza makes any meal that much better, and on top of everything, I love the fact that all of the restaurant’s leftovers at the close of service are donated to a local homeless shelter. Though its current location at La Brea and Olympic isn’t too much of a stretch of the legs for me, I can’t wait for its second location on Cahuenga to hit Hollywood, and I guarantee I’m soon to become a familiar face!
