Butchers & Barbers
Initially attracted by its name alone, I was excited to visit Butchers & Barbers this past weekend for its inaugural Saturday night dinner service. The first foray into the culinary world by cocktail lounge wonder-duo Mark and Jonnie Houston of Houston Hospitality -- the brilliant speakeasy-oriented minds behind such Hollywood staples as Pour Vous, Piano Bar, and No Vacancy -- Butchers & Barbers maintains the same lovely, discreet, old-Hollywood sensibility as the brothers' previous ventures. Located on the ground floor of the Hudson Apartments, the restaurant's bustling interior and surprisingly intimate garden patio (a feat, considering the blaring horns and gabbing tourists of Hollywood Blvd. are mere feet away!) provide the perfect setting for this darkly romantic venue. Serving plates of varying sizes all meant to be shared, the Roasted Cauliflower with brown butter and sheep's milk feta and the Delicata Squash with persimmon, burrata, smoked trout roe, and roasted squash seeds are seasonally delightful musts, as are the Mussels with white beer, crème fraîche, fennel, leeks, charred lemon, and habañero. I had to resist ordering a second round of bread with which to sop up this incredible, richly spicy broth! A wonderful new local haunt, I'm already excited envisioning my next visit to this perfectly swanky little gem.
